Positive Use Cases for <\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Science and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Technology in Human Rights <\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span face=\"Times New Roman, serif\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Investigations<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span color=\"#000000\"><span face=\"Times New Roman, serif\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span face=\"Times New Roman, serif\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-US\">at the <a href=\"https:\/\/rightscon.course.tc\/catalog\/course\/rightscon-online-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online 2020 RightsCon<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">The panel <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">explored <\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">the app<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">lication<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">s<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\"> of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">emerging technologies<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> to human rights documentation, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to help identify sites, remote sensing tools, and data analysis advances. The panel <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">was<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> balanced with grassroots documenters and international experts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">The first half of our discussion focus<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">ed<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> on how mass grave identification was aided by machine learning in Mexico. <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">The presentation showed how this complex technology, using data sets from victims families groups and civil society could help focus scarce resources on higher probability locations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">We then move<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">d on<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> to how remote sensing tools can help identify mass graves in Burma <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">and support other transitional justice and accountability goals<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">. <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">This section served as more of an exploration from the perspective of grass roots documenters who face high hurdles to adopting these kinds of methodologies. <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">The final presentation discuss<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">ed<\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> data analysis technology advances and their applications by Yemeni documenters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">The <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">last<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> 10 minutes of the session <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">were made<\/span><\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\"> available for questions and comments. <\/span><\/span><span color=\"#000000\"><span size=\"3\">Attendees were given the option to submit anonymously or voice their questions directly.
