English, Spanish, and Korean language guidance for civil society implementation<\/a><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=”40px|0px|0|0px|false|false” _builder_version=”3.19.18″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.19.18″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.18″]<\/p>\n On <\/span><\/span><\/span>July 29, 2020<\/span><\/span><\/span>, Access Accountability facilitated the session <\/span><\/span><\/span>What Can Go Right? Positive Use Cases for <\/span><\/span><\/span>Science and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Technology in Human Rights <\/span><\/span><\/span>Investigations<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>at the online 2020 RightsCon<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The panel <\/span><\/span>explored <\/span><\/span><\/span>the app<\/span><\/span><\/span>lication<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span><\/span> of<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>emerging technologies<\/span><\/span><\/span> to human rights documentation, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to help identify sites, remote sensing tools, and data analysis advances. The panel <\/span><\/span>was<\/span><\/span><\/span> balanced with grassroots documenters and international experts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The first half of our discussion focus<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> on how mass grave identification was aided by machine learning in Mexico. <\/span><\/span>The presentation showed how this complex technology, using data sets from victims families groups and civil society could help focus scarce resources on higher probability locations. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n We then move<\/span><\/span>d on<\/span><\/span> to how remote sensing tools can help identify mass graves in Burma <\/span><\/span>and support other transitional justice and accountability goals<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>This section served as more of an exploration from the perspective of grass roots documenters who face high hurdles to adopting these kinds of methodologies. <\/span><\/span>The final presentation discuss<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> data analysis technology advances and their applications by Yemeni documenters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span><\/span>last<\/span><\/span><\/span> 10 minutes of the session <\/span><\/span>were made<\/span><\/span><\/span> available for questions and comments. <\/span><\/span>Attendees were given the option to submit anonymously or voice their questions directly. They also had the option to submit their contact info for follow-up conversations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n In February 2021, we will publish an outcome report from the session exploring these themes in more depth, and evaluating potential directions for future use by human rights investigators.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\nSpeakers<\/strong><\/h2>\n
